Music

Phil Coyne | November 10, 2009 | 7:41 pm

As a radio “deejay” I’m somewhat expected to have a good taste in music. As some of you may have heard on The Midsweep recently, sometimes that’s called in to question.

The truth is, I have an eclectic taste in music which does include some quite rubbish ones, frankly. Bon Jovi, Girls Aloud, Black Eyed Peas and the like have made their way in to my iTunes library over the past few years and have been mixed up with classics like Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and The Clash etc.

You can’t tell me that John Peel never listened to music that was rubbish. Actually, he probably didn’t but I know what I’m trying to say!

What’s your guilty pleasure?

Music is just such a personal thing... even the stuff I consider to be 'rubbish' (such as X-factor winning pop) is making someone happy, somewhere.

Admittedly I've liked a couple of Girls Aloud tracks in my time. It might have something to do with the fact that a few of the videos depict them wearing very little clothing… but the tunes grooved along nicely enough too!

It's pointless and actually a little childish to worry about others' taste in music... there's always going to be enough variety to float everyone's boat. When we define a certain type of music or a particular song as 'rubbish' we erect an instant barrier between ourselves and the people who may really enjoy it. We create an instant opinion of that person… which is, frankly, ridiculous.

One of my wife’s favourite songs is ‘Islands in the Stream’ as sung by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. Uncool? Probably…. But who gives a flying f**k about ‘cool’. When that songs plays, she’s happy. It makes her smile.

Similarly, if I like a piece of music, I like it. Simple. OK, as a musician, I tend to pull tracks apart a little because I like to see how they’re constructed but I don’t feel obliged to like something because it’s considered to be good by someone else. And I can’t feel ashamed about liking something not present in their iPod playlist either.

    So… guilty pleasures? Nope… none. :)
